Frequently Asked Occupational Therapy Questions

  • Q: What is occupational therapy (OT)?

OT is a skilled service assisting clients with identified conditions to help gain independence. Using trialed strategies, an occupational therapist helps your child advance with their brain, muscles, and senses. Results come in the form of cognitive, behavioral, developmental progression that the child had difficulty progressing forward with prior.

  • Q: Who can receive an OT evaluation at Mighty Oaks?

Mighty Oaks Therapies is coded for billing as a pediatric outpatient office offering occupational therapy services. Pediatric clients should be between 0 - 21 years of age and will need a doctor's prescription referring them for services.

  • Q: What to expect from an evaluation?

You will need a prescription from your doctor to receive OT services and the prescription will be required at your evaluation. The first visit will be an assessment using standardized occupational therapy assessments as the client is able to participate. Goals are determined and set based on identified deficits and the level of importance that the family places on addressing these deficits. Your occupational therapist will guide you in understanding childhood development so that measurable goals will be realistic based on achievable proposed results.

  • Q: Do you accept insurance?

Mighty Oaks Therapies files insurance claims for two insurances: Cigna through the American Specialty Health portal and Blue Cross Blue Shield through the Availity portal.

Services are available via private payment for uninsured patients or those with ineligible or out-of-network plans. Your HSA or FSA may be used for payment via Stripe services.

Payments can be made in the form of cash, check, HAS/FSA, credit card, or Zelle services.

  • Q: “Our insurance plan doesn’t require a referral… does Mighty Oaks require one?”

Yes. The requirement of a “referral” by an insurance carrier is different from the referral required for an OT to provide pediatric occupational therapy. OT services require a medical condition to be designated on filed claims/billed services. All Texas OTs practice with a state license and according to the Texas Practice Act, “Intervention for a medical condition by an occupational therapy practitioner requires a referral from a licensed referral source.” Refer to page 44 of the Texas OT Rules, Chapter 372, “Provision of Services”-

Who can write your child’s referral? According to the Texas Practice Act, section 454.213 outlines the accepted practice of the
practitioner’s referral. “Implementation of direct occupational therapy to a person for a specific health care condition must be based on a referral from the professional designated as the “referring practitioner”, who may be: “a licensed physician, a licensed dentist, a licensed chiropractor, a licensed podiatrist, or another qualified, licensed health care professional who is authorized to refer for health care services within the scope of the professional's license.” This might include a naturopath, a nurse practitioner, a licensed psychiatrist, etc.
